Solo Improvisation in 12 Minor Keys
🎯 Assignment
Using the same backing track, practice creating a solo improvisation based on minor pentatonic rhythmic patterns in all 12 minor keys.
Your goal is to build confident phrasing and rhythmic freedom in every tonality.
- Play short rhythmic motifs in 12 minor tonalities, one key at a time.
- In each key, create 10–15 different rhythmic ideas, using the full minor pentatonic scale (1–3–4–5–7 degrees).
- Focus on making your improvisation sound like a real solo:
- clear rhythmic phrasing
- strong groove and pulse
- musical accents
- clean articulation
- smooth flow between notes
4. Try to connect your motifs into longer phrases, just like in a real performance.
5. Practice slowly at first, then increase tempo while keeping the same rhythmic precision.
📌 Bonus:
Record a short improvisation (1–2 minutes) and check:
- timing stability
- variety of rhythmic ideas
- confidence in key changes
- overall musical expression
