How to Play Expressive Bends on Saxophone
🎯 Assignment — Saxophone Bends (Pitch Bending Practice)
In this lesson, we start developing one of the most expressive techniques in saxophone playing — bends (pitch bending).
Exercise 1 — Lowering the Pitch
- Play a long sustained note with a steady and clean tone.
- Slowly move your lower jaw slightly backward.
- As you do this, the airflow direction changes and goes slightly downward — you will hear the pitch begin to drop.
- To return the pitch back to normal, smoothly bring your lower jaw back to its original position.
- The airflow will return to its normal direction, and the pitch will come back to the correct intonation.
Exercise 2 — Bend Down and Return
Practice bends using this structure:
🎵 normal pitch → bend down → return to normal pitch
Repeat this slowly and focus on smooth control.
Exercise 3 — Rhythmic “Bending” (Wobble Bend)
Try creating a rhythmic bend effect by moving your lower jaw back and forward in time:
🎵 down → up → down → up
This creates a controlled “waving” sound and helps you develop flexibility and precision.
Exercise 4 — Bend Up Into the Note
The second type of bend is the opposite approach:
- Start the note with a slightly lowered pitch.
- Then gradually bring the lower jaw forward and return the sound into correct intonation.
Low pitch → slowly rise into correct pitch
🎷 Focus on:
- smooth jaw movement
- stable air support
- controlled pitch changes
- clean tone (no squeezing or tension)
- musical expression
📌 Bonus:
Record a short video and listen for:
- how smooth your bend sounds
- whether the pitch returns accurately
- tone quality during the bend
